A continuous wetland habitat, present throughout the year but experiencing some degree of water level fluctuation, this South Fell pond has been observed to be host to Great Crested Newts (Triturus cristatus) the Slow Worm (Anguis fragilis) and the common lizard (Lacerta vivipara.)

 

There are other similar ponds across the fell which are also associated with the T. cristatus and so all of these sites are managed in accordance with the efforts to conserve this endangered amphibian, which is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
