Pteridium aquilinum

Pteridium aquilinum (Bracken) is another characteristic species of lowland heathland and is present in abundance at Waldridge Fell. It is however invasive to the habitat and its ability to rapidly colonise areas, especially where some form of disturbance has occurred (such as fire) means there is potential for direct competition with heathland natives like Calluna vulgaris. Uncontrolled it can form dense stands that are able to shade-out Calluna and prevent growth.
It is therefore a main focus of heathland management strategies that limit its expansion
