Nardus stricta
Also known as Mat Grass, N. stricta grows on acidic grassland and dominates this habitat where it occurs on Waldridge Fell. It can often be found on poorly-drained soils as at site S3 and is well adapted for growth in low-nutrient environments; lowland heathlands are therefore an ideal landscape type for this species. N. stricta forms very dense tussocks and can therefore limit diversity where it grows in abundance, suppressing the growth of other species.
