Typical lowland heath
The landscape at site N6 is a clear example of the lowland heathland habitat. It illustrates wide, open acidic grassland interspersed with low-level Calluna at various life-cycle stages and the community structure that is associated with that dominant heathland species. It also exemplifies invasive species at the habitat margins and a potential barrier to dispersal in the road that separates the North and South Fells.
The site is therefore an excellent representative of the current condition of many lowland heaths in Britain; it emphasises Waldridge Fell as vital for the focus of conservation efforts, due to its status as one of the most important and endangered landscapes in County Durham.
