Crataegus monogyna

Common name Hawthorn, C. monogyna is a main component of the scrub habitat found at Waldridge, along with Betula sp. and Ulex sp.

Scrub communities are invasive on lowland heathlands and so are managed, although on Waldridge Fell those containing C. monogyna are mostly confined to marginal areas, along roadsides and habitat boundaries. This reduces their potential importance for exerting negative pressures on the delicate heath ecosystem.

The stands of hawthorn found at Waldridge have the beneficial function of guiding visitor movement around the site, thus limiting any potential damage through trampling of organisms and the activities of dogs (namely digging and fouling.)
