Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is an ericaceous shrub that thrives on acid, low nutrient soils and so has an ideal habitat in lowland heath. It is often found on heathland sites in close association with Calluna and is abundant in areas of Waldridge. The species and other members of the genus Vaccinium can therefore be considered characteristic heath components.
